Biography

Hello and welcome to my piano studio! I’m Justin. After earning my doctorate in piano performance at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music I taught all kinds of students, from conservatory Master’s students to 5-year-old beginners.

Why I Teach

Although I enjoy helping students pursue ambitious goals — many have achieved honors in MTAC’s Certificate of Merit — my favorite moments are when their natural curiosity leads the way: a student arriving with an enormous list of compositions they want to learn, all of which they discovered independently. Another so excited to start their next piece they raced to share a recording of it with their parents. When people discover music they enjoy and have the confidence to make it their own, all the small details will follow.

How I Teach

Anyone can learn to play the music they love with patience, persistence, and guidance. That guidance differs for each student.

I teach beginners music like a second language: starting with play and intuition, then introducing analysis and technique when they are developmentally ready.

I encourage older students to develop their own musical tastes and opinions. We might spend 15 minutes listening to several pieces before selecting what to learn next. I also help them focus on the learning process as a whole (not just the end result of a performance) by creating video journals that document their projects and growth over time.

Let’s Connect!

Regardless of their age, my hope for each student is that music becomes a fulfilling part of their life and a means of self-expression. If you feel the same way, I’d love to arrange a trial lesson with you or your child.
